Getting Your Dining Room Ready for Festive Season
Share
Between Navratri and the end of wedding season, most Indian homes host more guests in four months than in the rest of the year combined. The dining room takes the brunt of it — and it's usually the room people worry about last.
You don't need new furniture. Here's what actually makes a difference, and when to do it.
Start 3–4 weeks before, not 3 days
The mistake almost everyone makes is leaving it until the week of the function. By then couriers across India are running slow, popular colours are sold out, and you're paying for urgency.
Anything you want in the house for Diwali should be ordered by early October. For a wedding, order the month before.
Cover the chairs before you do anything else
Dining chairs age faster than any other furniture in the house — daily use, food, children, years of being dragged across the floor. They are also the thing guests sit on and look at for hours.
A set of matching covers changes the room more than a new tablecloth, new curtains or new cushions, and costs a fraction of reupholstering. It takes about ten seconds per chair.
If your chairs are mismatched — some from one set, some picked up later — covers are the fastest way to make them look like they belong together.
Frill or plain?
For a function, frill. The gathered skirt reads as "dressed up" in a way a plain cover doesn't, and it hides the chair legs and any scuffing at the base.
For everyday use afterwards, plain is easier to live with. Many people keep a frill set for occasions and a plain set for regular days.
Choosing colours that photograph well
Everything gets photographed now. Some colours behave better than others under indoor lights and phone cameras.
- Beige and cream — the safest choice. They go with any dining table, brighten a dark room, and photograph cleanly.
- Brown and grey — practical for a house with children. Marks don't show. Brown sits well with wooden furniture.
- Green and pink — use when you want the chairs to be the colour in the room. Best against neutral walls.
One rule that always holds: match the covers to each other, not to the walls. Six matching chairs look intentional even if the colour isn't a perfect match for the room.
Buy two spares
If you have six chairs, order eight covers.
During a long function something will get spilled on. Having two spares means you swap a cover in thirty seconds instead of having one odd chair for the rest of the evening. It also means you can wash a few at a time without stripping the whole set.
The sofa is the other half
Guests move from the dining room to the living room. If the chairs are freshly covered and the sofa still looks tired, the effect is lost.
Measure your sofa the same day you order your chair covers — outer armrest to outer armrest — and do both together.
Wash everything a week before
New covers go straight on. But if you're reusing last year's set, wash them the week before, not the day before. Machine wash, line dry, and they'll be back to shape with no ironing needed — good stretch fabric doesn't wrinkle.
Doing it a week ahead leaves room for the wash to go wrong without ruining your plans.
A short checklist
- Count your chairs, add two
- Measure one chair — backrest height and seat width
- Measure your sofa — outer arm to outer arm
- Pick one colour for everything
- Order 3–4 weeks out
- Wash and fit a week before
